Stacy L. Johnson
Stacy Legray Johnson, 60, of Roanoke, Va, passed away on August 26, 2026. Stacy was born and raised in Roanoke. Having served in the US Air Force and Air National Guard for 33 years, his illustrious career of service included: Peace AFB, FB-111s Virginia Air National Guard, A-7 Corsair Chanute AFB Stewart AFB – New York Air National Guard, C-5 and C-17 He was highly regarded and well-respected as an Aircraft Pneudraulic Systems Specialist. Known as “Fingers Johnson” and “the best hydraulics specialist east of the Mississippi” he impressed with his incredible knowledge and skill in aircraft mechanics. Of his multiple honors and medals for his work, a few include: Air Force Commendation Medal(s) for Meritorious Service – New York National Guard Air Force Achievement Medal (s) for outstanding achievement Hometown Heroes Salute Medal 9/11 Certificate of Recognition for outstanding contribution and service to the mission of the Military Airlift Command -the 105th Field Maintenance Squadron The President’s Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service to the United States. Volunteering for numerous enroute deployments, he provided outstanding maintenance capability to bases within Panama, Hawaii, Alaska and Spain. His work on the Major Maintenance Steering Group 3 Project led to the new C-5 inspection criteria used today saving the Air Force in excess of 1.3 billion dollars.
In addition to being a highly decorated pneudraulics specialist, he was a decorated marksman. He was named to the President’s Top 100 as one of the top 100 shooters in the nation. He competed in the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Matches and the NCAA Rifle Championships.
He retired as a Master Sergeant from the Air National Guard and returned home to care for his parents. He loved to be outdoors hunting and fishing and working on his truck. He found enjoyment and comfort in his church family at Clearbrook Baptist Church. He was a great son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend and he will be missed so very much.
Stacy was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Myra Johnson, his sister-in-law, Diane Johnson, his mentor in Christ, Myran Shifflett, and his furry best friend Tango. He is survived by his siblings Deborah Weeter (Robin), Roy Johnson (the late Diane), Angela Dennis (Matthew), nephew Sam Weeter, aunts Evelene Arrington and Twila Bowen, cousins David Johnson, Susan Greene, Myran Shifflett, Jr., James Shifflett, and Leslie Arrington.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Clearbrook Baptist Church, Roanoke, Va. Visitation from 10:00 to 11:00, service from 11:00 to 12:00, then a brief military graveside service at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens to follow.
