Susan Traxel Martin

April 23, 1956 - June 9, 2024

Susan Traxel Martin, 68, was surrounded by her family on June 9, 2024, when she was called home to the Lord. Susan was strong in her faith, and we find comfort knowing that she is at the feet of Jesus. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gerard Vary Traxel and Dorothy V. Creasey Traxel.

Susan is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 24 years, Danny Martin, of Bassett, Virginia; their loyal pup, Ranger; her children, Steven (Amy) Kokkinakos, Heather (Brett) Norman and Nicole (Darrin) Slusher; and her grandchildren, Tommy (Lynette Carroll) Darr Jr, Caitlin Slusher, Kaitlyn Alexander, Jacob Norman, Lindsay Norman, and John Kokkinakos.

We celebrate her life and all of her accomplishments from being a graduate of Radford University’s Criminal Justice program to serving her community for ten years as a Park Ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Philpott Lake where she was surrounded by nature and wildlife, two things that brought her great joy. Susan was an Ambassador for Donate Life-Virginia where she spread education on organ donation. Susan was blessed to be the recipient of a double lung transplant (#1167) at Duke, on February 10, 2012, and now has had the honor to be an organ donor herself. Her generous gift will bless the lives of three or more families. There was no better way for Susan to leave a meaningful legacy after life than to give the gift of life to another family. These families are in our prayers.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, June 13, 2024, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, at Bassett Funeral Service. The funeral will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren. The burial will follow at Mount Hermon Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we request donations to Donate Life - Virginia (7305 Hancock Village Drive, #722, Chesterfield, VA 23832) or the Lung Transplant Foundation (1249 Kildare Farm Road, Suite 323, Cary, NC 27511). In addition, we ask that you consider the option of registering to be an organ donor by visiting Donate Life - Virginia.
