Sylvia Duncan McDaniel

March 28, 1932 - May 15, 2025

Sylvia Mae Duncan McDaniel, while in the loving care of her daughter, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on May 15, 2025 at the age of 93. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington Duncan and Tennis Mae Wade; her husband of 57 years, James "Buddy" William McDaniel; two brothers, Arthur Duncan and Roscoe Duncan; one sister, Icey Woods. She is survived by two children, Debbie McDaniel Sutphin and Dale William McDaniel (Edwina); three grandchildren, Kara Sutphin (Jordan Di Palma), Tyler William McDaniel (Devon) and Justin Ryan McDaniel (Alyssa Zern); and several nieces and nephews.

Sylvia "Sylvie" was born a Duncan on March 28, 1932, growing up in a small house on Cherry Branch Rd. in Snowville.  Her father was a farmer and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Times were tough in the 1930’s, but Sylvie always recalled many good memories of her childhood. Sylvie was a strong woman and a hard worker all her life, starting from the time she was 16 when both her mother and father had passed. At this time Sylvie chose to drop out of school to go to work to help support her and her sister Icey who were still at home. A couple of years later, she took a chance and agreed to go on a blind date with "Buddy" McDaniel, who became the love of her life. They were wed on October 18, 1952. Sylvie was a devoted member of the then First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Radford (now Compassion Church). She last worked for over 30 years in the kitchen at St. Albans/Carilion Hospital where she retired in her 80's. If you knew her, you knew that she was a great cook and her grandchildren would tell you she was famous for her Coca-Cola cakes. She also was a master gardener who was famous for her tomatoes. Most of all Sylvie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was cherished by her children, three grandchildren, and countless others.

Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Compassion Church be made in Sylvie's honor.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025, in West View Cemetery in Radford with Pastor Chandler Jones officiating.

The McDaniel family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.  www.mullinsfuneralhome.com
