Tammy Susan Hall Kaufholz
Tammy Susan Hall Kaufholz, 60, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at her home in Bassett, Virginia, beside her husband, Lane Kaufholz, Sr. She was born on August 13, 1963, to Sharon Hall and the late Vernia Hall I. She graduated from Fieldale-Collinsville High School and was employed at Fieldcrest Cannon until she became disabled. She was of Baptist faith and attended Victory Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by an infant sister, Vanessa Hall; sisters Justine Cummings, and Maxine Hall; and brother, VL Hall.
In her spare time, Tammy enjoyed painting. She loved the outdoors, animals, and spending time with friends and family. Above all, Tammy was head-over-heels for her husband, Lane. On March 20, 1981, Lane met Tammy through his late cousin, Rhonda. After one glance, Lane’s approval of Tammy was stamped with a thumbs up and a wink to Rhonda for her match-making skills. They had no idea how much this introduction would change their lives. That same evening, Tammy and Lane went to see “Funhouse” together, even though horror films weren’t necessarily Tammy’s favorite. After the movie, they indulged in Double Whoppers from Burger King before ending the night with their first kiss. That kiss was all Lane needed to know that Tammy was “The One.”
Over the next seven days, Lane and Tammy were inseparable, and on day nine, driven by an unstoppable force of young love, they decided to take a bold step. With an altered birth certificate (changing Tammy’s birth year from 1963 to 1962 to make her 18 and eligible for marriage) in hand, they jumped in Lane’s black ’67 Volkswagen and drove to South Carolina. At the courthouse there, the clerk saw through their attempt and refused to proceed. Tammy and Lane grabbed the papers and dashed out the door laughing at the audacity of their attempt. Once home, they were greeted by Vernia, Tammy’s father, who told them there was no need for them to go to South Carolina because he would sign the papers, allowing them to marry.
So, on day ten of their story, accompanied by Tammy’s parents and Rhonda, they stood at the Henry County Courthouse and exchanged vows. It was a simple ceremony bound together by the greatest love. The newlyweds went to Owen Mills where they had their official wedding photo taken, marking the start of the journey together followed by a trip to Shoney’s Big Boys, where they split a Hot Fudge Sundae as their wedding cake.
Their story took just ten days to start, leading to a marriage that spanned 43 beautiful years filled with adventure, challenges, and endless love. Although Tammy has passed on, Lane is left with a heart full of memories to cherish. As Lane goes through this season of loss, he is reminded of the beauty that was Tammy. She was his world, and even though she is no longer by his side, her love remains a part of him, a lot that will last forever.
Tammy is survived by her mother and brother, Marty Hall; one son, Lane Kaufholz, Jr. (Allison); two daughters, Ashley Kaufholz and Tabitha Determan (David); daughter-in-law, Santana Kaufholz; 12 grandchildren; and beloved pet companions, Lou Lou and Binky.
