Thomas "Bread" Leonard James

July 1, 1946 - April 1, 2023

Thomas Leonard (“Bread”) James, age 76, of Rocky Mount, VA passed away on Friday, April 1, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-laws Amy & Chad France and Kim & Jacob Gibson; four grandchildren Thomas & Katie France, Luke & Isaac Gibson; three siblings, Paul James (Shirley), Buford James (Sally) and Marie Sigmon (Coy) and special friend Micki Watson. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Shively James; Parents Wilbert & Effie James, and four brothers: Earl, Troy, Wilbert, Jr., and Winford James. Thomas was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. Thomas had a zest for life and lived each day with a kick in his step and a smile on his face. He never met a stranger. His positive nature and sense of humor were contagious. Thomas was owner and operator of 40 West Auto Sales in Ferrum for more than 35 years. He was a successful businessman who impacted his community in countless ways. He saw the best in everyone and took pride in providing neighbors with a car to drive or a home to rent. He helped many people throughout his life and considered the ability to do so a blessing. Thomas’s faith carried him through life and especially during his last few weeks. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the kind friends and family who visited, called and sent cards to bring Thomas comfort. A special thank you to Brock Silva who was considered by Thomas as family and to Robinette Jones, his wonderful caregiver during the last few weeks. Funeral services will be held at Rocky Mount Christian Church 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023 with H.L. Nolen officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. His family will receive friends at Rocky Mount Christian Church 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
