Verona T. Martin

May 14, 1934 - March 25, 2024

Verona Turner Martin, age 89, of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024 at SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin. The daughter of the late Wilbur and Winnie Hall Turner, Verona was born on May 14, 1934, in the Rangeley Community of Henry County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Hewlus Martin, and brothers Leon Turner, Ralph Turner, and sister Viola Turner.

Verona was survived by daughter Beth Martin Deal and husband John of Harrisburg, North Carolina and son Barry Martin of Collinsville, Virginia. She was affectionately known as “Nanny” by her grandsons, Travis Deal (Hayley Schultz) of San Diego, California, and Brendan Deal (Rong Ma) of Menlo Park, California. She was also survived by brother Ronnie Turner of Collinsville, Virginia, two nephews and nine nieces.

She will be lovingly remembered as a resilient and strong mother and grandmother who deeply loved her family and friends, always putting their needs ahead of her own. Although facing challenging health in recent years, she remained positive and an inspiration to us all. She was the source of our strength, and we will forever cherish her love and miss her faithful guidance. Verona enjoyed cooking, planting spring flowers, and spoiling her grandchildren. As a life-long member of Fieldale United Methodist Church, she attended church faithfully as long as her health permitted. Verona and Hewlus reliably served the church in many capacities throughout their lives; they were the first couple to be married at the church.

The family wishes to thank Joan Bell for her unwavering support, dedication, and love in assisting with the care of our mother. Joan will always be considered a cherished family member. Additionally, we would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin for their compassion and support during her stay in Hospice.

A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at Roselawn Burial Park with Reverend Daniel Collins officiating. Friends may pay their respects on Monday at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett, VA.

Memorial donations may be made to SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin, 243 N Lee Ave, Yadkinville NC or to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
