Vexter P. "Deckie" Hairston
Vexter P. "Deckie" Hairston, 86, of Dingess, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at his home. He was born on March 17, 1938, in Bassett, Virginia, to the late Philip S. Hairston and Clessie Hairston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy H. Stuart and Macie H. Young; and seven brothers, Telis Hairston, Ulysees E. Hairston, Johnnie Hairston, Joe L. Hairston, Howard D. Hairston, Matthew M. Hairston, and Phillip E. Hairston.
Vexter was a dedicated member of Word of Life Church and attended Greater Tabernacle of Praise. Known for his quiet nature, he loved the Lord deeply and placed his faith above all else. He worked as a brick mason for 45 years, taking pride in his craft. Vexter had a strong affection for his family and friends, and his love for them was evident in everything he did. He was passionate about motorcycles, serving as president and vice president of several motorcycle clubs in Clarksville, Danville, and North Carolina. An avid rabbit hunter, he also shared a special bond with his dogs, particularly his hunting dogs, and enjoyed caring for them.
Vexter is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Virginia Louise Hairston; two daughters, Chineta "Gee" Hairston and Monica Roy; two sons, Poindexter Hairston (Racheal) and Robert Burton (Kayla); 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth H. Johnson, Virginia H. Harley (John), and Ruby H. Eggleston (Lewis); one brother, William Benny Hairston; three special friends, Cathy and Jack Shively, and Rachel Dillard; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Melvin Robertson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at Colonel Hairston Family Cemetery.
