Victor R. Copening

Victor R. Copening, 64, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Sovah Health–Martinsville. He was born on November 12, 1960, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Harold M. Copening and Dorothy Thomas Hairston, who survives.

In addition to his father, Victor was preceded in death by his two brothers, Baby Boy Copening and Harold L. Copening; his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Mattie Copening; his paternal grandparents, Jessie and Hattie Morrison; and his companion, Cecil Dillard.

Victor was a devoted member of Meadow Christian Church. He had a deep love for sports, especially football and basketball, and his competitive spirit made him a joy to watch and be around. Known for his humor and big heart, Victor brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends, creating memories that will live on in their hearts.

In addition to his mother, Dorothy Thomas Hairston, Victor leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Victoria Rumley; his sons, Javon Copening and Chad Copening; ten grandchildren; one sister, Sharon Scales; one brother, Robert T. Copening (Melissa); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Meadow Christian Church Cemetery. A floating visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 12:00–5:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel.
