Zachary Austin Martin

March 31, 1989 - April 23, 2024

Zachary Austin Martin, 35, won the ultimate battle and gained his angel wings on April 23, 2024. He was born on March 31, 1989, in Martinsville, Virginia, to Marie Harris Waldron. He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Waldron; grandfather, Lacy “Pop” Harris; and grandmother, Terri “Boo” Wilson.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.” –Romans 8:18

Zach embraced life with enthusiasm and had an infectious personality. His optimism was evident, never complaining in the face of adversity, but instead facing challenges with grace and determination. One of Zach's greatest gifts was his ability to connect with others; he never met a stranger and being a social butterfly meant that he could strike up a conversation with anyone.

In his leisure time, Zach found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved the outdoors and spent time traveling and hiking. He was a bona fide foodie, and truly believed that “one cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well”. He often indulged in the finest delights and wouldn’t be caught without something sweet. His father, Mark, is to blame as he always whipped up the best food one could enjoy - especially steak.

Zach was a natural-born competitor and approached life with an unmatched zeal and determination. Whether he was watching a game or engaging in a friendly round of Skip-Bo, his competitive spirit shone through. As a devout fan of sports, Zach's passion for basketball knew no bounds. From cheering on his beloved UNC Tarheels to reveling in the victories of the Lakers, his enthusiasm was unmatched. He celebrated Kobe Bryant, while his disdain for LeBron James added a playful rivalry to his love for the game.

Zach’s presence brought comfort and joy to countless lives. With a heart of gold, he left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a void in our hearts, but the memory of his warmth, loyalty, and love will continue to bring us comfort. As we mourn the loss of Zach, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and the profound impact he had on us all.

Zach is survived by the love of his life, Ashley “Lil’Mae” Hardy; his mother, Marie Waldron; two brothers, Blake Martin (Brittany) and Tank Young (Jessica); grandmothers, Barbara “Nanny” Harris and Nell Waldron; grandfather, Albert Wilson; four nieces, Brielle, Lillian, and Emersyn Martin, and Nori Young; special friend, Madison Olson; beloved fur babies, Elvis, Kyah, and Millie Joe; and a host of other family and friends.

There will be a funeral service on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Day Star Ministries Church, with Pastor Susan Adkins officiating. The family will accept friends one hour prior to the service. A burial will immediately follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park in Martinsville, Virginia.
